This week’s Show Me Your Pedalboard is brought to you by Luis, his ’91 Fender Jazz bass, and some great commentary.
After a run through a Boss TU-2, a bit of compression is added with a Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer. Sounds pretty standard at first, but Luis has torn open the CS-3 and ‘modded some of the capacitors on that dude to quiet the hiss’. The next step is a Dunlop 105q Cry Baby fed into a Boss OC-2 in order to fill out any bottom end the wah might attempt to remove. Jumping into distortion, Luis has modded a ProCo Rat pedal ‘with the LM308n chip and a fancy green LED’. This mod to the original op amp capacitor is known to open the highs and reduce some hiss. Next up is a TC Electronic Röttweiler Distortion: a pretty massive metal distortion pedal which saturates all ends of the frequency spectrum. Adding to the variety of distortion, the chain continues with an EHX Sovtek Big Muff Pi to offer a slightly less destructive overdrive. This is where things start getting weird with a Moogerfooger MF-102 Ring Modulator. Okay, a ring mod may not be too crazy, but here’s what Luis has done with it: ‘I’ve got the carrier oscillator in and outs of the Moogerfooger MF102 Ring Mod controlled by the WMD Geiger Counter and the CV IN of the GC controlled by the LFO OUT from the MF102 (I had to reread that sentence a few times). It makes for really beefy modulation from the ring mod and ultra rad sample and bit depth sweeps from the GC corresponding with the ring mod. I just recently wired them up as such and I fucking love it man!’. All that chaos is tied up in a bow of tremolo with a Seymour Duncan Shape Shifter before making its way to the amp. But of course, Luis is mostly concerned with the Shape Shifter’s ‘sequencer type stuff that I dig, and the square wave [that] chops pretty hard, which is rad.’
